Purpose and effect of construction
1. Responding to urban population growth
Kinshasa is already one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with a population of over 20 million and growing by 500,000 people each year.
The city is becoming overcrowded, and existing roads are chronically congested. The road structure, which requires travel through the center (Gombe district), is reaching its limits.
The aim of building a ring road is to enable people to travel between suburbs without going through the city center, thereby decentralizing urban functions.
2. Improving the efficiency of logistics and economic activities
Improved access to N'Djili International Airport and port facilities, which will reduce import/export and domestic logistics costs.
Strengthening road connections to neighboring countries (particularly Brazzaville and Angola) will enhance the country's function as a regional economic hub.
Access to special economic zones and industrial parks (planned to be set up in the southern part of the map and in the suburbs) will be improved, further attracting foreign investment.
3. Urban Expansion and Real Estate Development
The ring road will encourage migration to the suburbs (Kimbangseke, Kimwanza, etc.) and create new residential and commercial areas.
Along with road construction, infrastructure such as electricity, water supply and sewage systems are also laid, which increases the real estate value of suburban land.
It is also an area where the interests of investors, construction companies, and politicians are at play.
4. Expanding capital functions to surrounding areas
- One point worth noting is that a sub-center is currently being developed in the suburban area, where about a quarter of Kinshasa's population will be dispersed. As a result, the area around this ring road will also be developed.
